Upgrading to Version 4
Version 4 of AB Tutor Control was released in May 2006. Since then, hundreds of schools and organisations have started running the new version, and we have had a great deal of positive feedback from users, particularly about the new Licence Management System.
If you have not yet upgraded to version 4, we would recommend that you do so, following the steps below:
Before you try to upgrade your installation(s), we suggest you download the version 4 User Guide from http://www.abtutor.com/html/ABControl.pdf and read about how to upgrade from version 3 on page 9. The following steps are the same, but shortened, instructions.
Upgrading to version 4 (If you use a proxy server please see next section)
- Check that you have an Internet Connection and that you have not blocked AB Tutor Control from accessing that connection (with, for example, a firewall)
- Launch the AB Tutor Control program.
- On the menu bar, select the Tools menu, followed by Check for Updates to download and install the update to the main Tutor Control workstation.
- Launch the newly installed version 4 Tutor Control program and connect to ALL client workstations.
- Select the Tools menu followed by Client Maintenance.
- Select the option Check for Older Client Programs and click on the OK button. If the system detects any older remote clients, a dialog box will be displayed.
- In this box, select the workstations to update and click on the Update Now button.
- If for any reason some of the clients fail to update, you will need to manually install the version 4 client on those machines.
Upgrading to version 4 (If you connect to the Internet via a proxy server)
- Download the latest AB Tutor Control version 4 from http://www.abtutor.com/html/Download.html.
- Check that you have an Internet Connection and that you have not blocked AB Tutor Control from accessing that connection (with, for example, a firewall)
- Install version 4 over the top of your version 3 installation by double-clicking the downloaded abtcsetup.msi file.
- When you launch new newly installed version 4, it will attempt to connect to the Internet to verify its licence; this will fail because you use a proxy server.
- Select Help - Licence Activation
- Enter your Account Serial Number (Please complete the form below to receive your Account Details)
- Press Activate; again you will get a failure message as it tries to connect, but this time a Setup button is displayed.
- Press this button and configure your Proxy Server
- Press Activate once again. This should now connect OK and activate your licence.
- Connect to ALL client workstations.
- Select the Tools menu followed by Client Maintenance.
- Select the option Check for Older Client Programs and click on the OK button. If the system detects any older remote clients, a dialog box will be displayed.
- In this box, select the workstations to update and click on the Update Now button.
- If for any reason some of the clients fail to update, you will need to manually install version 4 client on those machines.

Licence Management System and finding your Account Serial Number
With version 4 we have launched a secure online Licence Management System (LMS) through which you can obtain your account serial number (required for activating new installations of AB Tutor Control v4), manage and keep track of your licences. To obtain a username and password for accessing the system, please fill in and submit the form below.
Licence Management System – Logon details request
By completing and submitting this form, we will verify your account and e-mail you your Account Serial number and login details enabling you to manage your account and licences
Please note that for security reasons and to comply with data protection requirements, if we do not have your name and email address in our database, we may contact your school/organization before sending you your logon details.
For guidance on how to use the LMS system, please refer to page 72 of our user guide.
To log onto the LMS, please go to https://www.abtutorcontrol.com
Troubleshooting
Most problems encountered in upgrading to version 4 result from the following:
- No internet connection or connecting to the internet via a proxy server
- Trying to upgrade from unregistered installations
- Trying to upgrade from installations that have been marked as obsolete
- Trying to upgrade installations when there are no free licences (usually because we have not been given details of which installations to delete)
We would therefore recommend that before you attempt to upgrade your installations, you log onto the system and check your details. Please inform us (admin@abconsulting.com) of any errors in the account, such as obsolete or missing installations, as these could cause problems with upgrading.
For further help installing, activating or using AB Tutor Control, please refer to the Quick Start Guide, User Guide, Help and website. For problems that you cannot solve with reference to these, please do not hesitate to contact support.
